Pretoria Stoics are having our third meeting on Monday evening, 20 August, in the Karoo Kafee in Lynnwood Road, Pretoria. The topic we’ll be thrashing out is how Stoicism helped Jim Stockdale survive seven years in a Vietnamese POW camp. We’ll also consider the influence of Stoicism on Viktor Frankl and Nelson Mandela. We’ll be doing it on the strength of an address by Adm. Stockdale to US marine officers at Quantico, Virginia. The text of his address was published in two papers that can be found here and here. Our meeting time is 18:30. There is no cost involved, but I shall appreciate anyone attending supporting the venue by ordering something to eat or drink.. I shall available from 17:30 to present an introduction to Stoicism for anyone who missed the previous meetings and wishes to get up to speed. Please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org.
