Pretoria Stoics meeting on 22 July

We’re meeting at 18:30 on Monday evening, 22 July. We’ll be looking at Stoicism as an inner citadel in challenging times. All are welcome.

“Therefore the mind which is free from passions is a citadel, for man has nothing more secure to which he can fly for refuge and for the future be impregnable.” Marcus Aurelius

The meeting will be at the Karoo Café in Lynnwood Road. As the venue is now charging a fee, a voluntary contribution is requested from attendees to cover venue costs.

Meeting of Pretoria Stoics to discuss philosopher-kings on 24 June at 18:30

The next meeting of Pretoria Stoics will be on Monday evening 24 June at 18:30 at the usual venue, Karoo Cafe in Lynnwood Road, Pretoria.  We’ll be discussing the need for virtue and what philosopher kings can mean for a modern world right now. We shall discuss Marcus Aurelius as a philosopher king, comparing his life to the ideal he described in his Meditations. Taking lessons from the Stoics, how can we retain equanimity and thrive under increasing uncertainty?

In case you’re wondering, the photograph is my puerile attempt at irony, or is it sarcasm?

Five core ideas from Stoicism

marcus-aureliusFive core ideas from Stoicism; for the athlete, for the soldier, for all of us

1. Strive to live in accordance with nature, both nature as the environment and human nature (presumed to be rational).
“This thou must always bear in mind, what is the nature of the whole, and what is my nature.” Marcus Aurelius (Meditations)

2. Attend to that which you have control over, and be indifferent to all else.
“Make the best use of what is in your power, and take the rest as is happens. Some things are up to us and some thinks are not up to us.” Epictetus (Enchiridion)

3. Live according to the four cardinal virtues – wisdom, justice, courage and temperance.
“Virtue is a habit of the mind, consistent with nature, and moderation, and reason. … It has then four divisions – prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.” Cicero (On Invention)

4. Hardship cannot be avoided, but we can accommodate, adapt and come out stronger.
“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” Marcus Aurelius (Meditations)

5. Make most of now, live in the present; carpe diem.
“We live only in the present, in this fleet-footed moment. The rest is lost and behind us, or ahead of us and may never be found.” Marcus Aurelius (Meditations)

Pretoria Stoics: Visit the Sage-on-the-Mountain

sage-on-the-mountain

Pretoria Stoics’ Monday evening meetings do not suit everyone, so we’re creating another opportunity for prospective Stoics, or anyone just curious about Stoicism, to say hello. Come and chat to the Sage-on-the-Mountain about Stoicism at the Pretoria Botanical Gardens, any time between 15:00 and 17:00 on Sunday afternoon 27 January. The Botanical Gardens are beautiful after the recent rain and worth a visit in any case. Current members of Pretoria Stoics are also invited to drop in. Remember that to live in accordance with nature is a core Stoic principle!

The accompanying Google Earth photo shows roughly where I’ll be – about 80m west of the Milkplum Cafe just after the big cycads – look out for the the signs to the Arboretum and for my red flag.

Entry fee to the Botanical Garden is R35,00 per person. Please RSVP to leon.pta.stoics@gmail.com. Provide your cell number so that I can contact you in case of last minute changes to arrangements due to weather.

PS. – No, I absolutely do not regard myself as as Stoic sage, but Sage-on-the-Mountain sounds better than Fool-on-the-Hill!

James Stockdale

Pretoria Stoics are having our third meeting on Monday evening, 20 August, in the Karoo Kafee in Lynnwood Road, Pretoria. The topic we’ll be thrashing out is how Stoicism helped Jim Stockdale survive seven years in a Vietnamese POW camp.  We’ll also consider the influence of Stoicism on Viktor Frankl and Nelson Mandela. We’ll be doing it on the strength of  an address by Adm. Stockdale to US marine officers at Quantico, Virginia. The text of  his address was published in two papers that can be found here and here. Our meeting time is 18:30. There is no cost involved, but I shall appreciate anyone attending supporting the venue by ordering something to eat or drink.. I shall available from 17:30 to present an introduction to Stoicism for anyone who missed the previous meetings and wishes to get up to speed. Please RSVP to leon.pta.stoics@gmail.com.

A Stoic community in Pretoria, South Africa

stoa_wallpaper_by_arete_eirene_phile

Stoicism is an ancient Greco-Roman philosophy that is experiencing a modern Renaissance. The first Stoa was established by Zeno of Citium in Athens around the year 300 BC. Stoicism has guided the lives of slaves and emperors, clerics and soldiers, sports people and artists; and just ordinary people like all of us, through the ages.

I am in the process of establishing the first Stoa on African soil in Pretoria, to be known as the Pretoria Stoics / Stoïsyne. We shall explore Stoic Philosophy as an answer to a good and meaningful life in uncertain and volatile times. We are affiliated to the international Stoic Fellowship and we plan to present our own Stoicon X this year, as well as to participate in International Stoic Week early in October.

We invite anyone with an interest in Stoicism to attend our meetings. It should be of specific interest to anyone who faces uncertainty and/or volatility in his or her personal or professional life. This could include business and sports people, professional people, clerics, retirees, etc.

Our first Meetup will be on Thursday, 21 June at 19:00 at the Willows Country Lodge just of Lynnwood Road in Pretoria. Get more info and RSVP at this link (or e-mail me at leon.stander@makingsense.co.za):

Camaraderie among shooters from different disciplines at mental game workshop

On 20 January 2018 I presented a complimentary Mental Game workshop to representatives of some of the members associations of the South African Sport Shooting Confederation (SASSCO). I did this as a service to the sport shooting community and also to market my workshops to this community. Not all associations made use of the offer, but these were represented (in no particular order):

  • South African Pistol Federation
  • South African Practical Shooting Association
  • South African Metallic Silhouette Shooting Association
  • Clay Target Shooting Association of South Africa
  • Compak SA & Sporting Clay Target Shooting
  • South African Air Rifle Federation
  • SA Hunters & Game Conservation Association (Gallery Rifle)
  • South African Pin Shooting Federation
  • South African Benchrest Shooting Federation
  • Black Powder Shooting Union

Delegates_MG_Workshop_Pta_2018-01-20

Many of these associations involve a variety of different disciplines and types of firearms, which demonstrated again to me the wonderful diversity of sport shooting. Sport shooting has to be the most “democratic” of all sport, where men and ladies, juniors and veterans, able bodies and persons with disabilities can all compete against one another and all be competitive.

The camaraderie among the officials and athletes of these diverse sport shooting codes were palpable and all learned from each other. “War stories” of competing from club level to world championships, even the Olympics, were swapped.  All had a great time and from the positive comments in the reflection sheets, I believe that all found the workshop worthwhile.

Mental game training workshop for athletes of all sports, coaches and sport shooters, 3 March 2018

yshokkie2

Whether you are a beginner or an accomplished athlete, your mental game contributes significantly to your performance. As a thumb suck, I would estimate 25% in the case of a beginner and up to 90% in the case of a top competitor. That being the case, by how much can you improve your performance by getting expert training in the mental game? And, crucially, implementing what you’ve learned? Even a relatively small improvement in performance and consistency will move you significantly up the ladder of whichever sport you do. So, what are you waiting for?

My next Mental Game training workshop for athletes, coaches and sport shooters will be on Saturday 3 March 2018 at the conference centre of the Willows Country Lodge in Pretoria. While it is specifically aimed at sport shooters, but will be applicable to most sports.  The workshop will cover the “canon” of sport psychology, which is goal setting, stress management, self talk, imagery and focus. In addition to this, I shall be dealing with intuitive vs. rational decision making, developing expert heuristics and habits, developing a Stoic-growth mindset, pre-performance routines and so forth. You can access a PDF with more information on the content of the workshop by following the link below:

2018 Dr LJ Stander Mental Game Workshop_V01

Versions of the workshop have been presented to sport shooters in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Polokwane. The evaluations and feedback of participants were  very positive and the vast majority believed that their performance would benefit by the experience.

The workshop will start at 08:00 and end at around 16:00. Lunch, as well as refreshments on arrival, at tea time and in the afternoon are included. A set of handouts will be provided. The cost will be R950,00 per athlete, payable by EFT or in cash at the venue. Only a limited number of slots will be available. Please complete the Google form below to register for the workshop. Please register by Monday 26 February if possible.
